The town of Candijay was said to be based from the word Kang Dihay which means a strong man with lots of followers. It was later changed to what is now known as Candijay during spanish era. This town has 29,475 population and consider as a 4th class municipality. BISU (Bohol Island State University) School of Fisheries is situated in this town where modern fishing method and preservations are being offered.
